Integrated Management of Vehicle Motion

The Safety and Motion High Performance Computer (S&M HPC)  is an integration platform for the central management of vehicle motion.


Additionally, it plays the role to host all non-AD enhanced safety functions, as well as decoupling point between the vehicle head and the vehicle motion.

Safety functions

The Safety & Motion HPC is a dedicated integration platform for functions with high requirements towards safety and latency.


It offers compliance up to ASIL D, with a combination of flexible service-oriented function calls and guaranteed response times known from fixed scheduling approaches.


One example for such a safety function is enhanced pre-crash safety, the assessment of in-cabin scenarios and adjustment of e.g. seat angle, seat inclination, airbag deployment strategy before an unavoidable crash.

Decoupling point

The Safety & Motion HPC is a decoupling point between the vehicle head and the vehicle motion.


It offers a standardized interface towards the outside world (e.g. vehicle head, smart infrastructure, etc.) to request all kinds of movement.


It provides the abstraction of sensors and actuators from both classic domains, chassis and powertrain, to enable a central and holistic motion management.

Solution enabler

The fusion of the classic domain chassis, with its brakes, steering, dampers, and the classic domain powertrain, with everything concerning propulsion, is visible in upcoming E/E architectures. The new motion domain is dealing holistically with every aspect of vehicle movement.


Reduction of complexity within the E/E-architecture, consolidation of arbitration and increase of energy efficiency are just a few benefits to be highlighted here.


For example, the Safety & Motion HPC with  Continental’s central motion functions has all relevant information centrally available to decide for the best and most energy efficient chain of effects. No additional negotiation between actors necessary.
