With this solution, Continental offers future vehicle manufacturers and partners a development environment for software intensive vehicle architectures that enables them to implement software, sensor, and Big Data solutions in a fraction of the development time previously required. As a result, vehicle software can be developed and tested more efficiently, safely, and can flow directly into the vehicles. To bring the Continental CAEdge framework to market, the Continental developers will be able exploit the full potential of the latest technologies. The CAEdge framework is already available to automotive manufacturers in the series development of their vehicles.
In a first project, camera and radar data from a fleet of vehicles was imported into the CAEdge framework and used for virtual simulations of highly automated driving. For processing these huge amounts of data, the CAEdge framework provides a powerful development environment that supports all steps in the development of highly automated and autonomous driving systems: from sensor data acquisition and processing to data management, model training and virtual simulations, and vehicle software updates. As a result, individual development steps that used to take several weeks due to the effort required to transfer data and train algorithms can be completed in just a few hours. This is made possible by the scalable computing capacities of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and by machine learning.
Continental provides the mobility experts and a deep understanding of the automotive sector, while AWS, as a leading cloud computing provider, brings access to state-of-the-art machine learning and other innovative and efficient cloud services. With the expertise of Continental and its customers, a development environment has been created that will accelerate the development of highly automated and autonomous driving systems.
With Continental’s framework, all developers and participating companies will in future work in an efficient and automated development environment with modern tools, test procedures and security precautions. With the CAEdge framework, Continental's customers benefit from a network designed to protect their information, identities, applications, and devices. This means that an automotive manufacturer developing a new product solution, has exclusive access to the data and can grant access rights to other companies - including Continental - or another development partner.
Around 20,000 of the more than 51,000 engineers working at Continental are already experts in the fields of software and IT. In the field of AI, Continental already employs more than 900 experts, and this figure will rise to around 1,900 by 2023. Continental is the first automotive supplier ever to supply a central Body High-Performance Computer for the production vehicle of a major manufacturer.
