About Us

Safe and Dynamic Driving towards Vision Zero

The Chassis & Safety division develops and produces integrated active and passive driving safety technologies as well as products that support vehicle dynamics. The product portfolio ranges from electronic and hydraulic brake and chassis control systems to sensors, advanced driver assistance systems, airbag electronics and sensorics as well as electronic air suspension systems all the way to windscreen washer systems and headlight cleaning nozzles. The focus lies on a high level of system competence and the networking of individual components. Thus products and system functions are developed along the SensePlanAct chain of effects. They form the foundation for automated driving.

    Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Stress and information overload have become inseparable from modern-day mobility. A great variety of dangerous moments demand fast, well-considered action without taking the eyes off the rest of the traffic for even an instant. Innovative advanced driver assistance systems from Continental help drivers to stay on top of things, to arrive safe and relaxed.

When Every Second Counts: Accelerate Your Stop

    Hydraulic Brake Systems

The stopping distance is crucial. Because in an emergency braking procedure, every centimeter counts. The technological progress that hydraulic brakes have achieved since being invented exemplifies the evolution of traditional safety components in global traffic. Innovations from Continental in the field of braking hydraulics make a vital contribution towards ensuring that when it comes to braking one thing above all comes to a standstill: the vehicle.

As one of the world’s leading suppliers of hydraulic braking systems, Continental produces a succession of new, optimized solutions for an established braking technology. The product portfolio ranges from disc, parking and drum brakes to brake hoses and boosters. Hydraulic braking technologies have proved their worth millions of times over – and do a lot of hard labor worldwide in ensuring drivers’ safety: for, in order to halt a car weighing about two tons and traveling at high speed, the power of about 1000 kilowatts is needed, which has to be provided reliably in a matter of seconds.

So in the future, too, friction brakes will remain a central issue. Short stopping distances and optimum boosting of the braking operation are still the primary imperatives, since many drivers in critical situations often do not press the brake pedal hard enough. We know this – and have defined our portfolio accordingly.

    Passive Safety Sensorics

It’s a tight turn, and the wheels turn at different speeds. From every corner of the vehicle, sensors offer feedback on the driving situation. In order to keep the vehicle safely on the road, the sensors communicate with other important components, such as the airbag control unit. And if a collision should occur, the vehicle’s occupants are protected by the airbags around them.

Restraint systems, such as seat belts and airbags, protect vehicle occupants when all available options for preventing an accident through further active interventions have been exhausted. Previously, these types of protection have been designed for specifically defined accident types, such as side or frontal impacts. Real-world traffic doesn’t always fit these scenarios, however. When a driver loses control of the vehicle because it has gone off the road, for example, there are a lot of forces at work on both the vehicle and the people inside it. In this kind of situation, seat belts and airbags can only provide optimum protection if they are controlled and triggered at the right moment and in the right order.

For Enhanced Stability and Braking Comfort

    Vehicle Dynamics

Electronic brake systems (EBS) nowadays rank among the most performant active systems in terms of traffic safety. They ensure the stability and controllability of the vehicle in situations where sudden, unexpected external influences can easily turn driving into a sliding experience. The advantages of electronically controlled braking are obvious: the shortest possible braking distance, as well as stability-enhancing braking and steering interventions – and thus more safety in road traffic.

Around a quarter of all accidents involving injury to occupants are caused by the vehicle skidding. Electronic brake systems from Continental rank among the most field-proven safety factors that effectively assist the driver in this situation. They intervene supportively if the vehicle threatens to become unstable, and prevent it from leaving the lane. The car remains stable, because, for example, under the influence of ESC (Electronic Stability Control) individual wheels are briefly decelerated within fractions of a second and the engine torque is instantly adjusted.

The system continuously checks whether the actual direction of travel corresponds to that of the driver’s intended path. ESC will intervene immediately if safety-critical deviations are detected. Electronic brake systems and their components rank among the most important elements available for safe, relaxed driving on our roads. And this goes for almost all categories of vehicles; their applications range from small cars to transport vehicles.
