Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC)

Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) is Continental’s market ready solution for V2X. DSRC allows vehicles to directly communicate with each other through over-the-air messages compliant to the IEEE 802.11p standard. Each vehicle broadcasts with this interoperable standard, for example its position, speed and heading while other vehicles “listen” to these messages, enabling a direct communication between them. This allows a perception, detection and assessment of dangerous situations (road obstacles and potential collisions with road users) even before they can be noticed visually. Continuous research and development since 2006 underline our commitment to V2X. By active participation in projects like simTD (Safe and Intelligent Mobility – Test Field Germany) and membership in the Car-2-Car Communication Consortium, Continental possesses expertise in all relevant fields. The standardized frequency band of 5.9 GHz (IEEE 802.11p) as technology base for wireless communication enables direct, low latency information exchange between vehicles as well as with the infrastructure. Consumer privacy and data security are guaranteed by design.

The key information for V2X communication is acquired by the intelligent positioning sensor M2XPro (Motion Information to X Provider). Based on the fusion of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) information with the driving dynamics sensors (steering angle, inertial and wheel speed sensors), M2XPro provides an accurate, reliable and available position information.
